Nvidia CEO Says $30B OpenAI Bet Could Be the Last Before IPO
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said the company’s massive $30 billion investment in OpenAI could be the last time the chip giant invests in the artificial intelligence startup as it prepares for a potential public listing.
Huang made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, offering new insights into Nvidia’s strategy in the rapidly expanding AI sector.
OpenAI IPO Could Change Nvidia’s Investment Plans
According to Huang, the possibility of OpenAI going public later this year is the main reason Nvidia may not make further investments.
“The reason for that is because they’re going to go public,” Huang said during the conference discussion.
If OpenAI launches an IPO, it would shift from private funding rounds to raising capital through public markets, reducing the need for large direct investments from corporate partners like Nvidia.
Earlier in September, Nvidia and OpenAI had highlighted a massive $100 billion infrastructure vision tied to AI development. However, Huang suggested that such a large additional investment is now unlikely.
Nvidia Also Signals Final Investment in Anthropic
Huang also addressed Nvidia’s relationship with OpenAI competitor Anthropic.
The Nvidia chief said the company’s $10 billion investment in Anthropic will likely be its final major financial commitment to that startup as well.
Anthropic has emerged as one of the most prominent AI companies competing with OpenAI, developing advanced language models and AI systems.
Strategic AI Partnerships Still Continue
Despite signaling an end to large new investments, Nvidia is expected to remain closely connected to both AI companies through technology partnerships and infrastructure support.
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) power a large portion of the world’s AI computing infrastructure, making the company a key supplier to both OpenAI and Anthropic.
Major technology firms, including Microsoft, have also backed Anthropic and other AI startups as the race to develop advanced artificial intelligence accelerates.
Nvidia’s Central Role in the AI Boom
Over the past two years, Nvidia has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global AI boom. Its specialized chips are widely used to train and run large AI models, including those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic.
By investing directly in leading AI startups, Nvidia has strengthened its position at the center of the AI ecosystem—both as a technology provider and as a strategic partner.
What an OpenAI IPO Could Mean
If OpenAI proceeds with a public listing, it could become one of the most closely watched technology IPOs in recent years.
A public debut would give investors broader access to the company while potentially raising significant capital for expanding AI infrastructure, research, and global deployment.
For Nvidia, the shift would likely mean transitioning from direct investor to key technology supplier, continuing to benefit from the growing demand for AI computing power.
