BYD’s December EV Deliveries Slide, but Company Leads China Sales in 2025

BYD reported a sharp decline in electric vehicle deliveries in December, closing out a volatile year for China’s EV market marked by aggressive price competition and weakening domestic demand. Despite the late-year slowdown, the automaker maintained its position as the country’s top EV seller for 2025.

The company delivered 414,784 vehicles in December, down from 474,921 units in November, according to a regulatory filing released Friday.

December Decline Reflects Market Pressures

Price War and Soft Demand Weigh on Sales

The month-on-month drop underscores mounting challenges in China’s EV sector, where intense price wars and cautious consumer spending have pressured even the market’s largest players. December deliveries were also sharply lower compared with the same period a year earlier, highlighting the impact of slowing demand.

BYD’s December performance capped a turbulent year in which automakers increasingly relied on discounts and incentives to defend market share.

BYD Still Dominates Full-Year EV Sales

2025 Sales Exceed 4.54 Million Vehicles

Despite the December pullback, BYD remained the clear leader in electric vehicle sales for 2025. The company delivered more than 4.54 million vehicles for the year, allowing it to meet its revised sales target.

Earlier in the year, BYD cut its 2025 delivery goal by 16% to 4.6 million vehicles as domestic demand weakened. The final results show the company came close to that adjusted target.

Wide Lead Over Global Rivals

BYD’s annual sales far exceeded those of global competitors. Tesla reported 735,274 China wholesales from January through November, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association, leaving BYD with a commanding lead in the world’s largest EV market.

Chinese EV Startups Gain Ground

Leapmotor and Xpeng Lead Growth

While established players faced slowing momentum, several Chinese EV startups posted strong growth in 2025. Leapmotor and Xpeng stood out among emerging manufacturers, driven largely by demand for more affordable models aimed at cost-conscious consumers.

Their performance highlights a shifting competitive landscape in China, where value-focused vehicles are gaining traction amid economic uncertainty.

Outlook for 2026 Remains Uncertain

As China’s EV market heads into 2026, analysts expect competition to remain fierce. While BYD’s scale and pricing power continue to give it an edge, sustained demand growth will likely depend on broader economic conditions and the industry’s ability to move beyond price-led competition.
