Japan Stocks Soar to Record Highs as Conservative LDP Win Sends Yen Tumbling Past 150

Japan’s stock market erupted on Monday, with the Nikkei 225 soaring over 4% to close at a record 47,944.76, after the country’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected staunch conservative Sanae Takaichi as its new leader. Takaichi is now poised to become Japan’s first female prime minister, and investors are betting her economic policies could supercharge growth.

Tech, Real Estate, and Industrials Lead the Charge

The rally was driven by real estate, technology, and consumer cyclical stocks. Notable gainers included:

  • Yaskawa Electric Corp, up over 20%
  • Japan Steel Works, up 14%
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, up 13%
  • Kawasaki Heavy Industries, up 12%

Market analysts say the surge reflects investor optimism about Takaichi’s pro-growth stance and a potential high-pressure economy approach that could sustain monetary stimulus while keeping interest rates relatively low.

Yen Falls as Investors Eye BOJ Policy

Alongside the stock rally, the Japanese yen fell past 150 against the US dollar, reacting to expectations that Takaichi will urge the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to maintain its accommodative monetary policy. Crédit Agricole CIB noted that she could even consider a modest 25-basis-point rate hike by January 2026, signaling a careful balance between growth stimulus and inflation management.

What This Means for Global Markets

Takaichi’s rise marks a potential new era in Japanese economic policy, with her conservative stance likely to focus on boosting domestic investment, supporting key industries, and maintaining BOJ stimulus. Global investors are watching closely, as these moves could impact everything from technology exports to industrial production and currency flows worldwide.

With Japan’s market now hitting record highs, analysts expect volatility to continue, driven by policy announcements, BOJ decisions, and investor sentiment around Takaichi’s first months in office.
